Turkey Climbs 15 Places in the E-government Development Index

Not long after introducing the e-government strategy through which some of the public services are now delivered by using digital means, Turkey managed to climb 15 places in the E-government Development Index (EGDI) created by the United Nations. E-government, or better said, the use of online services for delivering public services, has brought good news to the Turkish government which managed to streamline several procedures related to the access of the population of public services offered by the central or local authorities.

According to the UN, Turkey climbed 15 places in the E-Government Index for 2018 and now ranks 53^rd at a global level. The higher ranking is the result of the integration of digital services with the plan of reducing bureaucracy. The process took 18 months; however, Turkey now has 1,600 e-government services.

E-government in Turkey, according to the UN

The EGID report issued by the UN assesses countries on a 0 to 1 scale, based on 3 dimensions. These are the online service index (OSI), the inherent human capital scored through the human capital index (HCI) and the status of the development of telecommunication infrastructure rated through the telecommunication infrastructure index (TII).

In 2018, Turkey had an overall score of 0.7112, while in the sub-indexes it scored 0.8889 in the OSI, 0.8148 in the HCI and 0.4298 in the TII.
